How to maximise the burn time of Beeswax Candles

Beeswax has a lower melting point than parrafin and soy candles. Therefore beeswax candles are best burnt on a plate or similar heat proof surface. Do not put these candles in a lantern (as this increases the heat the candle is subject to – speeding up burn time)

Burn time on beeswax candles is generally longer per weight of candle as the wax is more dense.

How to Light Beeswax Candles

When first lighting a beeswax candle the flame will be quite large, much larger than the ‘resting’ flame. This is because on the initial burn the wax is drawn through the wick. There may be some soot/ large flame persisting for 5-10 minutes after which time the flame tends to settle.

Important

It is important to burn the candle on a level heat proof surface, avoid drafts (which will cause flame flicker and dripping) and burn for approx 4 hours on the initial burn.

How to extinguish beeswax candles

The wick used for beeswax candles is thicker than the wick in other candles (which allows for a larger flame further from the wax thus keeping the wax cooler). Therefore when it comes to extinguishing beeswax candles this is best done with a candle snuffer and will create less smoke. If blowing out conventionally expect more smoke/ soot. Usually beeswax candles stop smoking around 30 seconds after extinguishing depending on size of the candle.

Re-lighting Beeswax Candles

Following the initial burn, when it comes to re-lighting the candle, ensure the wick is trimmed to around 6mm. If the wick isn’t trimmed and has a curl present, this will place the flame to one side of the candle, which may cause guttering and dripping.
